How the Price of Cryptocurrencies Is Calculated
A common mistake new investors make is to start looking at the price of a cryptocurrency. If you look at the price of Bitcoin, this can seem incredibly high in that case. But, to find out if the price of a specific currency is expensive or cheap, one must also look at the market value (market cap).
The exchange rate for cryptocurrency is calculated by dividing the total market value by the supply of respective cryptocurrency. With supply of a cryptocurrency we mean the total number of coins that is in circulation. Let’s say we have a cryptocurrency with a market cap of 25 billion and there are only 20 million coins available in circulation. Then the price is calculated by taking 25,000,000,000 / 20,000,000, which will be 1,250 USD.
This means that the available supply as well as the market value is crucial for calculating the exchange rate of the cryptocurrency. Therefore, one should not only look at the price but also the market cap and availability.
